“Set It Off” was one of the first movies when I started to pay close attention to the actress, Jada Pinkett Smith.
There was something about her I gravitated towards. Although her acting is first class I can’t say it was the primary reason I found her to be intriguing and interesting to follow. Yesterday after reading one of her most recent Facebook status updates, I once again experienced that rush of warmth, inspiration, and kindness that I’ve taken away each time I’ve seen her on television or the big screen.
This time it was her words that inspired me and struck a cord with me, “Don’t be afraid to be grown…” is a statement of encouragement we all need to hear and be reminded of from time to time. Often times we forget that the challenges we face in life, the disappointments, the successes and failures are all a part of being grown. She also reminds us that with every battle scar of life we become wiser, smarter, and more confident in life, which all translates into beauty.
As we grow older we slip into an awful habit of counting the wrinkles on our skin and subtracting from our age when we should be proud to be as Jada put it, “GROWN.” Reading her post provoked thought because, as an entrepreneur, I have learned so much about myself, business, people and what it means to be humble and successful all at the same time.
The definition of beauty may vary from person to person but I do agree with Jada; our challenges, triumphs and maturity from within is what makes a person the most beautiful person in the world. To quote Jada, ” it’s our deepening, our self-actualizing, that creates the beauty…that lasts…for eternity.”
