Have you recently updated your relationship status on Facebook? Are you wondering why so many people are interested in your relationship status change? Are you starting to wonder if changing your relationship status was the right thing to do?
I have been surprised lately to see how many relationship status changes have taken place on Facebook. Each time I log-in I am greeted by someone’s public announcement that they are either single, in a relationship, or my favorite “in a relationship and it’s complicated!” It seems to be a common trend. However, I believe it has to do with the time of the year.
Spring is the time of year when we are itching to meet new people, have adventurous sexual experiences, and characterize current relationships as complicated, giving spring an edge. Although, I understand the benefits to defining a relationship, I am still not sure how defining a relationship “complicated” makes it less complicated, especially when you are proclaiming it on Facebook.
Facebook has become an arena where total strangers can weigh in on your status updates, even your relationship status change. It is amusing when someone updates their relationship status for hundreds to see but than becomes annoyed or surprised when someone makes some sort of comment. Relationships are fascinating and intriguing to most. I believe that no matter how common “in a relationship and it’s complicated” becomes it’s the status the majority of us could do without.
Relationships are between two people and once you allow the world to weigh-in on your relationship status it makes EVERYTHING complicated. So remember the next time you update your relationship status, you’re making a public announcement to hundreds of strangers about a part of your life that should be deemed personal and private.
