This Tuesday was an evening of fun and kinkiness. With some close friends I saw the Broadway show Kinky Boots, the new musical based on a true story which is currently in previews.
The star-studded producers form a list of who’s who of theatre and includes four-time Tony Award® winner Harvey Fierstein, Grammy® award-winning pop icon Cyndi Lauper and Tony Award® winner Jerry Mitchell. Fierstein wrote the book, Lauper wrote the music and lyrics, and Mitchell directed and choreographed.
About the show: “Charlie Price (Tony nominee Stark Sands) has suddenly inherited his father’s shoe factory, which is on the verge of bankruptcy. Trying to live up to his father’s legacy and save his family business, Charlie finds inspiration in the form of Lola (Billy Porter). A fabulous entertainer in need of some sturdy stilettos, Lola turns out to be the one person who can help Charlie become the man he’s meant to be. As they work to turn the factory around, this unlikely pair finds that they have more in common than they ever dreamed possible… and discovers that when you change your mind about someone, you can change your whole world.”
This show was absolutely fun and uplifting! The lead stars Stark Sands and Billy Porter really stood out. Porter’s lines were hilarious and his timing and delivery were exceptional. Also noteworthy was the performance of Annaleigh Ashford (Lauren) who provided us with a handful of laughs as she swoons for Charlie.
If this show seems to ring a bell, you’re not far off. The show is based on the Miramax motion picture Kinky Boots written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. My recommendation, take a few friends and go out and enjoy the show. You’ll have a kinky fun time.
