Miss Lawrence – Breakout Star

urbanlandmedia.com, televsion, musicCharming, delightful, and talented are a few words I would use to describe Miss Lawrence (Lawrence Washington), best known as Sheree Whitfield’s hairstylist on Bravo’s hit show “The Real Housewives of Atlanta.” Most recently he has proven he is not only Sheree’s hairstylist but also a talented vocalist. His chart-climbing hit, “Closet Freak” is the proof in the pudding.

I had the pleasure of speaking with Lawrence to find out a little more about this rising-star and what we can expect from him in the future.

1. A lot of readers are curious to know how did the collaboration between you and Kandi come about?

During the end of season two, going into season three, during the taping of the reunion, Kandi and Lawrence were backstage at which time he complimented her on how well “Tardy for the Party” (performed by housewife Kim Zolciak) went. Lawrence and Kandi have the connection of going to the same high school, Magnet Performing Arts High School in East Point, Georgia.

Then, after attending Kandi Burress’s showcase for her most recently released album, he mentioned to Kandi that he’d love to get back into music. Kandi mentioned her new record label (Kandi Koated Entertainment) and that she was looking for talent and an openly gay performer. From there it all happened.

2. How would you describe your single “Closet Freak?”

Lawrence believes a closet freak is someone who is afraid of being themselves; someone who has not fully embraced who they are and accepted it. Rather than accepting who they are, they “play” a role and look down upon those who are comfortable with themselves.

3. You’re famous for the line “I need to see a therapist. I just can’t stop playing in heels.” How did you come to liking heels so much and who’s your favorite shoe designer?

Over the years Lawrence took notice of a transformation that happens to women when they wear heels. They come to possess an attitude and a positive energy that eludes sex appeal, strength, and confidence. He recalls the first time he wore heels. He was in his twenties and attending a Prince concert with a friend he calls “the ruler of stilettos.” As they were shopping, he decided it would be fun to wear a pair of fierce pumps and pay homage to Prince.

4. Being that you never aspired to be a recording artist and now with the success of your single, is this going to be a new career direction for you?

Although Lawrence did not pursue music early on in his career, it has always been one of his passions. He believes the universe eventually brings forth what you were intending to do and have passion for in life. He’s now embracing the music side of his passion, outside of beauty [being a celebrity hair stylist]. Lawrence has a passion for both music and beauty and plans to fuse the two.

5. You have a great sense of style, where do you draw inspiration?

Lawrence loves fashion and gets his inspiration from everywhere. There is no one place from which he draws inspiration. He did share a story with me about the outfit he wore in the “Closet Freak” video clip I mentioned I had seen on YouTube. It was intended to be worn at a Philadelphia ball at which he was going to walk. His friends canceled going to the ball so he did not have a chance to wear the outfit. The category he was going to walk in was to dress as your favorite animal. The outfit was his interpretation of that category, a black panther.

6. If your friends had to describe you in one word, what would that be?

“Ovah!” Lawrence describes this as being well rounded. Being “ovah” means having an open heart but being a bitch when it’s necessary. It’s about being ambitious but caring and comfortable in who you are.

7. If YOU had to describe yourself in one word, what would that be?

Since he used “ovah” in the previous question, he chose “Sickening” as we both chuckled.

8. What do we have to look forward to from you in the near future?

We can look forward to two new beauty products and he’ll definitely be pursuing more recording opportunities. Be on the lookout. With his spirit and charm he’s already a superstar.

That's all we have to say on the subject
