Whether you live in or are visiting NYC, when you ride the fourth busiest rapid transit rail system you see and experience fashion like no other place. Just the other day while riding the number 2 train heading home from the movies on 34th Street, near Macy’s, I began to think about fashion and where its true influences come from. You just have to go to the subway to see. There are so many instances of fashion you can find while riding the “Iron Horse” a phrase they used to describe the railroad system and one that referred to the =NYC Subway system while I was growing up.
It’s such an inspiring and motivating experience when you ride the train because it’s that one person who walks through those trains doors that captivates the essence of the urban lifestyle. I have not been disappointed when I ride the train and am checking out everyone’s sense (or lack of) style. Self expression is the true definition of New York City and you can see it on everyone around you no matter which train line you take or neighborhood you end up in. Some strap-hangers (people who ride the NYC subway system) are Fashion Risk-takers. They dare to be different. The color combinations I sometimes see are daring and nothing you would think about. I am always amazed by the style and trendy minds that ride the train.
It never fails, after riding the subway I am forever encouraged to create clothing for the urbanites who live for fashion. Urban FLRT is fun-wear that I believe fits the rhythm of the city. It’s no wonder why I believe the NYC subway style is the true inspiration beyond what’s called fashionable. If you love fashion, come to New York City and ride the Iron Horse and be inspired. The term “strap-hangers” will never really do it for me, I prefer “Subway Style Urbanites.”
